Summer at Cajal

Cajal Academy’s Summer Program:

Project-based learning, Self-discovery and Community

July 8 - August 2, 2024 | Rising 1st through 12th graders

New this year! Sign up for our Morning program (9 am - 1 pm), or stay for the full day (9 am - 3 pm) to explore new interests and work with our expert team of therapists!

Cajal Academy’s summer program offers a unique opportunity to experience a whole new way to learn that is tailored for bright, gifted and profoundly gifted kids with strong analytical and/or creative thinking skills. We give kids an opportunity to explore their strengths, with specialized strategies empowering them to overcome social-emotional, learning and physio differences that threaten to hold them back.

As with our academic year program, students in our summer program will collaborate with like-minded peers to solve real world problems; learn the science behind inter-connections between social, emotional, physical and learning experiences—and how they can use that to their advantage; and work with our year-round team of expert licensed therapists and experienced academic teachers. Above all, they will join a unique community of bright and intellectually-gifted kids, fostered by instruction to help them understand their peers’ differences and their own needs as well.

Our program is conveniently located in Westport, CT, with train transportation available for students coming from New York City, Westchester county and other parts of Connecticut and shuttle service to the school. Ask us for more information about transportation via Metro North.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes! All summer students will have the opportunity to work with the same Cajal Academy teachers and licensed therapists who run our academic year program.

  • Our morning academic program follows the same therapist-designed protocols and approaches that our school year program does. Social skill development, sensory strategies and our occupational therapist designed Body Informed Learning are integrated into the classroom and all we do. Small group and 1:1 sessions with our licensed occupational, physical, speech and language and craniosacral therapists, as well as our PhD-level psychologist, are available in the afternoons on a limited basis. Preference will be given to students enrolled in the 2024-25 school year by May 15.

  • All applicants for our summer program who are not enrolled at Cajal Academy for the 2023-24 and/or 2024-25 school years must complete the same application as we use for our academic year programs. All applications must include a completed parent application, any prior evaluations or assessments completed for your child and a $125 application fee to partially defray the costs of our clinical team’s review.

  • Morning program: $5,500.

    Full day program: $7,500

Afternoon only: $2,300 (only open to siblings of students enrolled in the full day program)

Early bird discount: $250 off for each child enrolled in the summer program before May 1.

    Second sibling discount: 10% off

  • Like our academic year program, Cajal Academy’s summer program is tailored to the needs of students who have very high analytical reasoning and/or creative thinking skills. Our clinicians make this determination based on the verbal comprehension, fluid reasoning and/or visual spatial scores in any prior psycho-educational or neuropsychological assessments that have been performed. Exceptions may be made in the case of students having certain complex medical conditions that variably impact cognitive access in our experience. We do not rely on full scale IQ, and students are not required to have been previously identified as “gifted.”

We embed expert services for students who have an area requiring specialized instruction, however an IEP is not required.

Priority will be given to students who have enrolled for the 2024-25 academic year.

  • Cajal Academy’s Summer Program integrates standards-based academic instruction with special education services from a multi-disciplinary team of licensed therapists. As such, families are encouraged to speak to their school districts about eligibility for Extended School Year services.

  • We are accepting applications now, and will be admitting students on a rolling basis. Total enrollment will depend on the profiles of the children enrolling. Early bird discount of $250 ends May 1.

  • Our summer program is open to students entering grades 1-12 for the 2024-25 school year.

Morning Academic & Skill Building Program

9 am - 1 pm

Learn new academic, social, executive function and neurophysio skills in our morning session: a condensed version of Cajal Academy’s year round, neuroscience-based approach to learning and social-emotional development

Spend your July with Cajal’s unique community, and experience a whole new way to learn! Our summer cohort will work together as a team to collaboratively solve a real world problem—one that requires them to integrate across math, science, social studies and language arts curricula to develop the analysis, synthesis and creative thinking skills that are essential to 21st century success. They will be further immersed in the topic through field work trips into the community and visual arts classes. All of this is supported through our exclusive Body-Informed Learning, which gets kids up and moving to accelerate their learning, instead of pressuring them to sit still and listen.

Our morning session is taught by Cajal Academy’s expert, year round team of teachers and licensed OT, PT, SLP and psychology clinicians. Curriculum and supports to build executive function, social-emotional, self-regulation and physio skills are integrated into the project curriculum itself. Meanwhile, all our students receive instruction in the neuroscience behind learning and social development, fostering an authentic growth mindset, and coaching in how to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for their needs. High school students will take this one step further through leadership training and mentoring opportunities.

All students interested in joining our summer program must complete our regular admissions application; students who are enrolled in our current or upcoming school year are not required to submit an additional application.

Eligibility and Tuition:

All students for our Summer Program must meet the admissions requirements applicable to our academic year program.

Tuition: $5,500, with a 10% second sibling discount and a $250 discount for students enrolled before May 1

Find out more about Cajal Academy’s unique approach to education!

Our summer program applies the same innovative, next generation educational model as our academic year programming, implemented by our regular expert, multi-disciplinary team of licensed therapists and experienced educators. These include expert occupational and physical therapists, along with a PhD-level psychologist who is an internationally-recognized neuropsychologist. Find our more about our ground-breaking approach!

Specialized Programs for Unique Cohorts

Through our work with students having complex educational profiles, we have developed programmatic approaches incorporating specialized instruction, direct services and accommodations to support a number of special educational needs that are often mis-diagnosed and/or under-supported. Cajal Academy’s team of licensed therapists are also diagnosticians to whom families and school districts often turn for independent expert evaluations. This helps us to identify needs that may have gone under- or mis-diagnosed in prior settings, especially for students who have a combination of challenges whose combined impact is bigger than the individual parts. This same team supports our summer program, and we apply the same methodologies that we do in our academic year programs, just on a smaller scale.

Here are some of those profiles; click through to our program descriptions to find out more about these profiles and Cajal Academy’s unique programming approaches to support them.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome & other complex medical conditions

Cajal Academy offers first-of-its-kind programming for students with complex medical conditions that drive variable impacts on learning and social-emotional access. These include Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and other connective tissue disorders, mast cell activation syndrome, POTS and more.

Sensory Processing Disorder

Therapeutic activities designed to increase children’s abilities to process and integrate sensory information are integrated into our summer program by Cajal Academy’s co-founder: a skilled sensory therapist.

Social-Emotional Intensive

We are a trauma-informed school—and go beyond that to integrate expertise and therapies addressing the ways that children’s hidden neurophysiologic events can influence their social-emotional functioning and regulation. We integrate coaching in how to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for children’s unique needs, along with social cognition and social skills development.

Dyspraxia, Dysgraphia and Motor Coordination

Work with expert, licensed occupational and physical therapists is integrated into the program for students who struggle with fine and/or gross motor coordination to develop foundational skills necessary to accelerate motor coordination growth and improvement.

Visual Tracking & Visual Processing

Exercises and expertise to improve visual tracking and visual processing designed by our licensed occupational, sensory and visual processing therapist are integrated into the program to support these core academic skills, improving reading and academic regulation.

Complex Profiles

We developed our educational model around the reality that children are multi-dimensional, and that we need an expert ‘home’ for our kids who have multiple overlapping learning, social-emotional, neurophysio and/or chronic medical needs.

Integrated, expert special education instruction and services with licensed therapists

All Cajal Academy student programs are customized for their unique profiles of strengths and challenges, using the data in their neuropsychological and physio profiles. Services and expertise from our highly-qualified team of licensed therapists across psychology, neuropsychology, occupational and physical therapy are integrated into the program, through co-taught classes, direct skills work and our exclusive, Body-Informed Learning. All known or suspected areas of special need should be discussed in the application process to ensure that appropriate program supports can be put in place for your child’s needs.
