Special Event:
Information Session & Tour for Special Education Attorneys, Advocates and Consultants!
Thursday, Nov. 17, 6-7:30 pm
Join us for a special information session, tour and reception to learn more about our unique program for bright, gifted and twice exceptional students!
Cajal Academy fills a previously-unmet need in Connecticut and Westchester County, New York, providing an outplacement environment that is specialized to the needs of students who have high intellectual gifts and abilities and would thrive with small class sizes and real world project-based learning. Our unique, flexible programming levels foster a diverse and inclusive community for students with a range of learning, social-emotional, executive function/ADHD and neurophysiological needs.
Cajal Academy's unique educational model and therapeutic approaches were designed by our team of licensed occupational and physical therapists, in collaboration with our psychologist, Steven Mattis, PhD, A.B.P.P.: a recognized leader in the field of neuropsychology and professor at Weill Cornell Medical School. These include a low-sensory environment, movement integrated into the classroom, differentiation based on neurocognitive strengths and weaknesses and our exclusive, Neuro- and Trauma-Informed Approach.
We also offer first-of-its-kind programming for students with complex chronic medical conditions that incorporates specialized instruction in how to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for their needs, providing a socially-engaged and therapeutic alternative to home-bound instruction.
Please join us to learn more about our program, or contact us for another opportunity to meet the team and tour our school!
Please RSVP to let us know that you’re coming:
About Our School:
Cajal Academy is an innovative new, non-profit school for bright and intellectually-gifted kids, with learning, social-emotional, neurophysiological and/or chronic medical differences.
Our curriculum, pedagogy and therapeutic techniques were developed by our multi-disciplinary team to align to current neuroscientific research about how kids learn, socialize and grow. Here are some of the ways Cajal Academy is unique:
We integrate movement and physio therapies into instruction, using an OT/PT-designed pedagogy that accelerates academic growth;
Students learn standards-based curriculum in ability-based classes that are tailored to the needs of intellectually-gifted students and differentiated using the data in each student’s neuropsychological profile;
Students collaborate together to solve real world problems that develop our students’ high critical thinking skills, while creating organic opportunities to develop the executive function and social skills where our cohort often struggles;
We work to reduce learning challenges, not just accommodating them, through interventions applying neuroplasticity to build up low-lying neurocognitive skills;
We empower students to optimize their social-emotional and learning outcomes, by coaching them in strategies they can use to identify their triggers, scientifically understand their reactions and gain agency over their responses;
First-of-its-kind program for students with complex chronic medical conditions, integrating direct services and specialized instruction to help students learn how to self-monitor, self-manage and self-advocate for their medical needs, providing an alternative to home-bound instruction;
Trauma-informed school with embedded expertise in understanding and improving neurophysiological regulation (Cajal is not an ABA program)
Integrated diagnostic and treatment expertise for a range of disabilities, provided by our on-site licensed physical, occupational, cranio-sacral and sensory therapies, neuropsychological diagnostic services and counseling with a PhD-level psychologist;
Discussion-based classes ranging in size from 1:1 to 1:6
